Submitting an application does not guarantee adoption – we carefully match each dog with the best possible home.
Dog Information
We do not DNA test our dogs. Breed and age are best estimates based on experience and veterinary input.
Records & Fees
Medical records are provided through AnimalsFirst after adoption. A 5% service fee applies to all adoptions.
Travel Policy
Out-of-state adopters must meet their dog in person to ensure it’s the right fit for both the adopter and the pup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Adoption Basics
What is the adoption process like?
Our adoption process is simple and designed to ensure the best match for both you and the dog:
- Apply through AnimalsFirst (save your login info)
- Complete a phone interview
- Submit a virtual home check (photos or video)
- Meet the dog if approved
- Complete your adoption contract and payment
- Bring your new best friend home!
Will you respond to my inquiry or application?
Yes! We’re a small team and aim to respond to most inquiries within 48 hours. The best way to hear from us is to submit a complete application.
We may not respond to very general messages like “How much?” or “Do you have puppies?” Repeated calls without a voicemail may delay a response. We also reserve the right to decline communication with individuals who are rude or disrespectful to our team.
Can I meet a dog before applying?
No. For the safety of our dogs and fosters, we only schedule meetings after an application has been approved.
Preparing for Adoption
What do you look for in a home check?
Home checks help us ensure a safe environment for the dog. We’re not concerned about cleanliness—we’re simply looking for potential hazards like escape routes, toxic plants, exposed wires, or unsafe spaces.
If anything needs to be addressed, we’ll let you know. Most issues are easily fixable and not a barrier to adoption.
How should I prepare my home for a new dog?
A little preparation goes a long way in helping your new pup settle in safely.
Start with safety:
- Secure loose wires and remove hazards
- Store cleaning supplies and toxins safely
- Keep trash sealed and out of reach
Basic essentials:
- Food & water bowls
- Toys (rotate and supervise use)
- Bed (start simple)
- Crate (for training and safety)
- Treats & chews
- Collar, leash, and ID tag
- Puppy pads (especially helpful for young dogs)
Fees & Logistics
What does the adoption fee cover - and why does it matter?
At Pups Without Borders, we work hard to keep our adoption fees as low and accessible as possible while still providing a high level of care for every dog.
Unlike many shelters, our dogs receive comprehensive support before adoption and ongoing guidance after they go home. This helps set both dogs and adopters up for long-term success.
Our adoption fee is all-inclusive and covers:
- Age-appropriate vaccines
- Spay/neuter and microchipping (through SNPLA)
- Deworming, fecal testing, and any necessary medical care
- Housing, transport, and daily care while in rescue
While our fees may be higher than some municipal shelters, they reflect the full scope of care, preparation, and support each dog receives – and help us continue rescuing more dogs in need. Learn more about why adoption matters and how adoption fees help support lifesaving rescue efforts.
How do I pay my adoption fee?
Once approved, you’ll receive an email through AnimalsFirst with your adoption contract and secure payment link.
Additional Questions
Can I be considered for another dog if I’m not selected?
Yes! If you’re approved but not selected for a specific dog, we’ll keep your application on file.
Approved adopters can often move more quickly for future dogs – just reach out when you see another pup you’re interested in.
Do you offer trial periods?
We offer “foster-to-adopt” placements on a case-by-case basis, depending on the dog.
This option is not available for puppies due to high demand and the importance of stability during early development. If a medical issue arises within the first two weeks, our contract includes support options.
Can I adopt a dog if I live outside Los Angeles?
Yes – with a few requirements:
- Dogs must be at least 4 months old (fully vaccinated, including rabies)
- Adopters must arrange pickup
- We do not ship or transport dogs unaccompanied
Can I adopt two dogs (or siblings)?
We occasionally allow two-dog adoptions, but not siblings from the same litter.
Littermates can develop behavioral issues known as “Littermate Syndrome,” which can lead to anxiety and aggression. For this reason, we do not place siblings together.
What if I'm not ready to adopt right now?
Do you have puppies available for adoption?
Yes! We regularly have puppies, adult dogs, and senior dogs available for adoption. Because availability changes frequently, we encourage adopters to check our available dogs page often and submit an application when they find a dog they’re interested in.
